JetKVM – Simply Challenging

I’ve built out a new computer that I’ve upset with ProxMox and will host a TrueNAS VM. I’m using a mini ATX motherboard in a Fractal Design Device case. It’s a hilariously over sized case for such a small motherboard. I’m sure I’ll regret that down the road. But for now I’d really like to have something similar to iDRAC access to the server. After all, a computer with a job is a server.

I love the look of the JetKVM but I missed the kickstarter boat. And because of those terrific tariffs (Fuck trump) the company has stopped shipping the units to the USA for now. eBay saved searches to the rescue! I found a used unit on eBay that came with the optional PCI card that gives you the ability to virtually press power/reset buttons and I over paid for it.

The seller said they would share the password and they were true to their word. Now I’m able to log into the webUI, but the first thing I want to do is reset the password. There is no option in the webUI to change the password, and looking at the knowledge base articles the only way to do it is to factory reset the device via DFU Mode (wasn’t working for me…) or enable developer mode and ssh into the box. The unit doesn’t allow for password authentication for ssh so I need to generate and use a key. Shame on me, all these years of using linux and I have not set this up before on my systems. Lucky for me, JetKVM has a really straightforward page that shows you how to do this.

I’m finally ssh’ed into the device and walk through the commands to reset the password. Yay learning!

And you know what I learned next? Fucking JetKVM’s webUI has root shell access right there all this time…

Web Terminal was in front of me the entire time...

I should use passwordless ssh in more application. But god damn it.
